A funding problem (for roads)

Why do South Carolina's roads have such a bad reputation? Well, it's because they are dangerous and poorly maintained. We are a small state geographically speaking, and yet the SCDOT maintains the fourth largest road network in the US.  For my first post, I'm going to recommend reading this editorial in the Charleston Post & Courier. It really hits a home run in explaining the challenge that our transportation system is facing.

P&C: South Carolina's deteriorating roads, bridges demand a gas-tax hike

The summary? South Carolina needs about $1 billion a year just to keep up with the deferred maintenance costs and other needs, and the 16¢ / gallon gas tax is hardly a sufficient "user fee" for our roads. Fortunately, there is a bill in the House that would adjust the tax to 21 cents, and tie the rate to inflation. I'll be interested to see how far this one goes.
